About HKL Vascular
Vascular Surgery is a relatively new surgical sub-specialty in this country. It encompasses diseases like peripheral vascular disease, aneurysms and varicose veins. Department of Surgery, Hospital Kuala Lumpur first provided this service for the Ministry of Health hospitals in 1993 and till today, it remains to be the main referral center for vascular surgery within the Ministry.

HKL Vascular provides treatment for a wide variety of vascular diseases. This includes, amongst others, varicose veins, peripheral vascular diseases and aortic aneurysms. We also provide services in creating and maintaining vascular access for hemodialysis for patients with renal failure.Patients are seen in the out-patient clinic on appointment basis. Urgent and emergency cases are seen as direct referral or through the emergency department.
In keeping with the current era of medical care, treatment in the form of endovascular procedures are provided along side with the conventional open surgery for vascular diseases. Major endovascular procedures are performed in the operating theatre.
To aid in performing pre-operative investigation and planning as well as post-operative surveillance, we have a non-invasive vascular laboratory which is equipped with duplex ultrasound machines, photo plethysmography and air plethysmography machines.

At present, HKL Vascular is the only centre recognised by the Ministry of Health of Malaysia for training of vascular surgeons. Any gazetted general surgeon with interest in vascular surgery can apply for enrollment into the training program, which is a minimum of 3 years structured fellowship program of The Ministry of Health. The Unit also caters for attachment postings of medical officers and surgical trainees from other departments and hospitals, with the specific aim of getting the exposure to the spectrum of vascular diseases and its management. As part of the Department of General Surgery, members of the unit are also involved in training of surgical trainees and house officers posted to the department.

Team members of HKL Vascular are regularly involved in CPD activities within and outside Hospital Kuala Lumpur. This includes lectures at various other Departments and Hospitals, Universities, meetings and seminars.
